Concentration Guide

If you know you want to do a stat concentration or minor, and you’re planning on taking Math 114 in your first 1-2 semesters, YOU CAN AND PERHAPS SHOULD AVOID 101/102/111/112. Instead, you can take Math 114, STAT 430, and STAT 431. The high course numbers are simply misleading – 430 and 431 are standard intro courses for students with sufficient quantitative background.

STAT 430 gives you important tools for dealing mathematically with randomness. If you’re going further into stats, you will want to take this course. We see many stat students take STAT 101 and 102, realize they want to do stats, and then take 430. That’s fine, but if you’re already planning on a stats concentration, just starting with 430/431 will set you up much more quickly. In either case, you will take STAT 430 as well as three additional stat classes to finish the concentration.

Here is the official guide. Of course, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to scheduling. Ask a USS upperclassman or statistics faculty member (read: don’t just assume Wharton advising is correct) for advice on the particulars of your situation.

For those of you in the College/Engineering/Nursing, a stat minor has the same number of classes and requirements as the Wharton stat concentration.
